Telling Your Tale

Take a moment to imagine yourself looking over your wedding photographs on your first anniversary.

As you flip through the images in your album, you remember the nervous laughter you shared with your bridal party after a few flutes of champagne. You remember your partner trying not to cry, overwhelmed with the emotion of your wedding vows. You remember that one story during the speeches that filled the room with happy laughter. But try as you might to recall the entirety of your day, it went so fast that you feel like you didn’t have time to capture it.

Aren’t you glad your photographs did?

Wesley and Fiona profile

Two Tell a Tale consists of us, Fiona & Wes Hellyer, a husband & wife team, born and raised in ye old Mount Gambier, South Australia (500km south east of Radelaide). We’re an outdoors type of couple who love ourselves a dose of nature, taking our K-9’ children (Dallas & Ruby) on adventurous hikes and letting loose on some dirt with our MTB’s. Another love/ passion of ours, is to photograph weddings in a ’tale’ type nature. This means capturing/ documenting couples in a way that reflects them.

We do this by ‘directing’ our couples instead of ‘posing’. This method (rocket science type stuff) for us enables images to take on, not only beauty, but a timeless quality, for our couples and all who view the photographs that were present on the day.

With our team telling your tale, your most beautiful story will live forever.

A lovely couple with great family values, chose to skip the engagement stage of things and go straight to getting hitched, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars (sorry).

The ceremony was held at Old Oval Estate, we’ve stated before our love for this venue, and they got ready together with their bridal party at a very scenic and most gorgeous location down the road called Rendzina Cottage, Tatachilla. To die for.

Their two year old son, Lewis, played a huge role throughout the proceedings, giving a wonderful sense of family and what the couple holds dear. “Having our son run over to us when we got emotional reading our vows. Having him so involved in the ceremony was a really special moment”- Perea + Leigh

The day was full of special moments, amazing backdrops and the loveliest of friends and family but none stand out like the tune that was playing whilst Perea, Leigh and young Lewis walked the aisle infront of their guests. Next door, in an adjacent winery, a music festival was being held. You could hear the music faintly (it in no way tarnished the festivities happening at Old Oval Estate) and the lyrics “riding…my Pony”, it was Ginuwine’s Pony. Perea, Leigh and those guests who made sense of the tune, had a few chuckles over this fact throughout the evening as you could well understand. Priceless.

Bree & Matt tied the knot at a McLarenvale icon, Serafino Winery......long gone is the day this lovely couple met at one of Adelaide CBDs famous night venue, The Dog & Duck, thanks to Matt's cheeky ways, pinching Bree's behind! Such a tale never really turns out like this but we're glad this one has.

The couple couldnt of asked for better weather and better guests on their day of days and made the most of everything with bubbly personalities and a celebration theme to their day.

Laid back natures. Appreciate the outdoors. Love great scenery. Have a Border Collie they spoil. People after our own hearts. Their wedding day consisted of all these and worked a treat.

The wedding day was a beautiful clear summers day at one of our favourite venues, Old Oval Estate, McLaren Vale, and it was full of cinematic backdrops, good vibes and a lot of fun. The couples choice to have a cocktail styled reception was to encourage guests to be in a constant state of mingling and joyful conversation. Yard games were also present and added another level to the experience for guests.

Post wedding, in an email, Kelly asks “Can we do it all over again?”, a true sign of how much this couple enjoyed their special day. To this we answer “Yes” Kelly, definitely!

Their reason for choosing Mulberry Lodge, a venue surrounded by lush vines, couple of open fields, pebble paths bordered with vibrant green lawns, elegant gardens and beautiful fully grown and saturated green trees. Really stunning venue.

Jo & Chris added one personal touch we melted to. The inclusion of their little Terrier during the ceremony which was led (he did the leading to be honest) down the aisle by their adorably cute flower girl. Awwwwww.

Post ceremony. We all headed down to Port Willunga for some late arvo photos of the old jetty, the sea and coast line. It allowed the bridal party to get their feet wet and have a bit of a frolic in the sand and sea.

Their reception was held at their Belair home. If you know the area, you’ll know its gorgeously abundant in flora up there and their home was no different. A beautiful layout that made great use of features they had, a lovely caged garden and the most eclectic homemade shed we’ve had the pleasure of seeing. Chris and his dad we believe had only just finished erecting it and it made for a real delight and topped off what was a that truly embraced Land & Sea.

Biggest thing for us as wedding photographers, besides getting along swimmingly with our couples and keeping them as calm, comfortable and relaxed as possible…is being able to adapt.

With prep shots, ceremony and location coverage being down at the bay in Glenelg, Danielle and Tommy (us included!) were hoping for perfect weather, which we had, um, if you took away the howling wind coming straight off the sea!! None the less we completed prep and ceremony with no issues. By the time the ceremony was over though the wind had intensified which would of made for really trying/ wind ravaged photos in the bay area and on the foreshore, an unpleasant time indeed and something you don’t want to recall when considering your wedding day later in life. We had to adapt….and quickly.

The reception that evening was being held at The Gallery in the CBD. We regularly photograph engagement sessions and portrait work in the area, making use of the long laneways, alleys and concrete/ urban look. We know it well and shoot accordingly to the environment. After a brief discussion with our trusting bride, groom and bridal party, we all concluded that we skip the bay for greener pastures in town. Completely change the program….freestyle it if you would.

All the location shots were taken in the immediate vicinity of The Gallery, using their spectacular street art feature wall, surrounding laneways and buildings. Worked an absolute treat!!! The area their ceremony was at, Partridge House Glenelg, consisted of a lot of vegetation/ greenery. The urban backdrop provided for an awesome contrast to ceremony images and both Danielle and Tommy were stoked with the end result and thanked us for the quick thinking and confidence we had in the change of location. Great to have that kind of trust displayed by these legends, with that in mind. We’re the ones that are most thankful.

This jovial couple were originally set up by friends and got engaged a few years later whilst holidaying in Canada and having a very Merry White Christmas. Unfortunately for the couple, the days just before their wedding day weren’t as ‘fairy tale’ like.

Three days out from the ‘Wedding of the Year’ in the cosy town of Naracoorte, South Australia, mostly the Adelaide region and its lower south east buddies, got hit with the storm of the century, the ‘Super Storm!’. The parklands the marquee was to be situated on was turned into a wetlands. Ducks, geese and other water dwelling birds had flocked from all over the state to bask in this lakes glory (chuckle to myself, bit more dramatic for readers pleasure). Family, friends and locals, including Buzz and Abe, spent the remaining time before the day, even the morning of, clearing six tonne (no stretching of the truth there) of fallen trees and leaves. On the upside, taking a positive outlook on what was no doubt a rough time for everyone concerned, the lake made for an amazing view the entire day as it was literally at the marquees front door. Things couldn’t of gone better…

Brian and Amber had been together 1860 days on the day Brian was hoping to propose. He wanted to use this fact to add to what he wanted to be, the most perfect proposal. Brian, with the help of a mate, created a ‘runway’ that was around 90 metres in length, and you probably guessed it, consisted of 1860 lit white candles. These stood out beautifully as it was all done in an empty hall with lights off and Brian at the very end waiting for a gobsmacked and wonderfully surprised Amber (thanks to some more of their friends whom had helped to pull the wool over Amber eyes as to what Brian was up to and his whereabouts over the day or so before hand).

With this type of planning, Amber’s exactly the same as both are promising young business people, they had a beautifully organised ceremony at the breathtaking Fox Creek Winery, Willunga, which was followed by their reception at the eclectic Russell’s Pizza, also in Willunga.

The theme for the day was ‘local produce’, a topic very dear to the couples hearts. It was evident throughout the day and even more so at Russell’s with local produce on display in their food and wine. One of many standouts, but definitely ‘the’ standout for us was their wedding cake that compromised totally of Bridal White Balfours Frog Cakes.
